Worst opening line of a romance novel (but it?s awesomely bad on purpose)

First, some background: For three decades, the English department at San Jose State University has held the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, a kooky�competition that challenges entrants to write the opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels. The contest�categories are: Adventure, Children’s Literature, Crime, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Purple Prose, Romance, Science Fiction, Vile Puns and Western.
