AMY Leach was one of the top performing students at Backwell School. She was delighted to discover she had gained a clean sweep of three A* grades at A-level. Amy, who is waiting on tables at a local cafe for the summer, hopes to go travelling and do some volunteer work abroad before pursuing a career in journalism.
She said: "I think my results are fantastic. I was hoping to get three As but this is a total shock."
Backwell's sixth form students celebrated excellent A-level results this year.
A quarter of all exam entries were awarded grade A* or A, and no fewer than 20 students managed at least three A* or A grades.
Head boy Matt John achieved four A*s plus a distinction in the advanced extension award and will study maths at Cambridge University, where he will be joined by Sarah Hill, who achieved four A*s, and Adam Mason, who earned four A*s and an A.
Katie MacMahon, who got three As, and head girl Alice Wilcox, who secured an A* and two As, have won places at Oxford University.
The school's head teacher Julian Baldwin said: "We are very pleased with this group of students' achievements.
"So many have made great progress over the last two years. We are proud not just of those who have achieved the very highest grades, but of the very large number of students who, after much hard work, have achieved their very best.
"They have been a delightful year group, and are now fully equipped for the next stage in their lives, be it in the world of work or in higher education."
