A PAINTER and decorator from Redfield who grew cannabis to use for medicinal purposes has avoided jail.
Mark Wilder was found to have a crop of plants in his loft with an estimated one-kilo yield of the Class B drug, Bristol Crown Court heard yesterday.
The 49-year-old, of Ivor Road, pleaded guilty to being concerned in the production of the drug.
Judge Julian Lambert, who said using cannabis was against the law "pain or no pain", asked Wilder if he would give it up and the defendant said he would.
Wilder was given a six-month suspended prison sentence, was told to do 200 hours of unpaid work and abide by a six-month curfew in which he must stay at home from 8pm to 7am on an electronic tag.
Derek Perry, prosecuting, said police found Wilder with a "small cannabis factory" in his loft, complete with heating lamps and a plant nursery. There was no evidence of any dealing to others.
Neil Treharne, defending, said: "There is medical evidence that he suffers from a great deal of pain. He needed to work, he was self-employed and the best way he could get through the day was to utilise cannabis."
